What I’ve Been Playing of Late 8 October 2015

I haven’t posted for ages. Figured I’d give people a run down on some of what I’ve been playing of late, in terms of video games anyhow. These are in no particular order.

First off apologies for the auto playing Twitch video below… it’s marked to not autoplay, but seems Twitch has a 2 year old bug that won’t be fixed until the HTML 5 player is more readily available.

I’ve been playing the Star Wars: Battlefront Beta (buy Star Wars Battlefrontvia Amazon). On my upper mid(ish) range system (i7 4770k, 8GB RAM, GTX 770) I’m getting 60-70+ FPS with all the settings on high. So while the system specs may scare some people, it actually is pretty solid even without the high end systems. Anyhow, it’s a fun game and delivers on all my expectations. The beta is very limited so hard to tell how the overall game will be, as many game modes and maps aren’t in the beta. It certainly looks like it’ll be a must have title for fans of either Star Wars or Dice’s Battlefield series. It is a bit more than Battlefield with a Star Wars theme though and I’d think it’ll appeal more to the Star Wars fans. It is probably a safe game to pre-order. There is no single player campaign, it’s all multiplayer and co-op.
Here is a Twitch highlight of me playing it.
Embed removed as it autoplays no matter how it is setup, click this to be taken to the video.

Devilian. This is an MMO with ARPG elements. I was using the Thai version, but now I’m in the Trion NA Alpha. The game isn’t in beta yet, just closed Alpha. Closed beta should be coming soon, with open beta soon after that. If you don’t win access via a contest on some Twitch stream, you can buy your way in. Alpha access is a bit expensive and probably not worth the price IMHO, but to each their own. The game will be free to play after launch, and launch should be 2015… I haven’t recorded anything new for the NA Alpha as of this initial writing, but here’s my video of me playing the Thai version awhile ago.

I sadly only got one match in of Warhammer The End Times: Vermintide, before the beta ended, but I did enjoy it a great deal. Vermintide is a Left 4 Dead 2ish sort of co-op horde mode game with a well done melee combat (and ranged) set in the Warhammer fantasy universe. With just one match it’s hard to say where it compares to say Killing Floor 2 (buy Killing Floor 2 on Amazon), which so far is the king of horde shooters IMHO (here’s a video of me playing Killing Floor 2 during an early access to it prior to launch, and the the game’s expanded a lot since then). Vermintide is much closer to Left 4 Dead 2 in terms of game play mechanics than Killing Floor 2. It’s fairly cheap, so if you are into horde shooters, it’s worth checking a few videos of it out and see if you want to jump on it. The only advantage to pre-order is a week early access, so unless you are a big fan of horde shooters or the Warhammer fantasy universe, wait.

Mad Max (get Mad Max at Amazon) is an enjoyable enough Batman Arkham/Shadow of Mordor type brawling game set obviously in the Mad Max universe with you as Max. It’s enjoyable, but combat isn’t as smooth as it is in the aforementioned games. Plus the camera sometimes gets positioned poorly and it makes it hard to keep the combos flowing properly and avoid being hit. I’d personally say wait for the Steam Winter Sale and see if it appears on that… I got it on sale for about $20, which was a fair price for it.

Of course I’ve played some Path of Exile, Diablo 3, Victor Vran and Grim Dawn… Not sure what to think of the last two. They are enjoyable and each adds enough unique things to the ARPG genre to be worthy of consideration. They’ve fallen behind due to Devilian.

Rebel Galaxy. I gave an early Look at Rebel Galaxy previously, and really enjoyed it then. I’m enjoying the copy I have now… as a matter of fact I probably should be playing that rather than write this, but I’ll jump back in soon enough. The game probably won’t be for everyone, but if you enjoy the idea of being a Space Cowboy… well… read that linked article, watch the video… oh and I got two new highlights on Twitch. Rebel Galaxy highlight 1 and Rebel Galaxy highlight 2. Then decide for yourself if it’s your cup of tea. It’s not a complex space sim like Elite Dangerous, there is no complex z axis, and is single player only, but the game is a nicely crafted open box space cowboy/trading/trucking game. Full disclosure I was given a review copy, but that doesn’t influence my opinion. As I said, it won’t be for everyone and you really need to watch the videos and the like that is out there and decide… I don’t know if I’d say this is a pre-order title. If you love the developers than support them by pre-ordering, and those who know they’ll like it based on what they’ve seen, should also pre-order, but for anyone on the fence, wait. See what the full reviews say after it comes out. I can’t do much of a review as I’m still fairly early into the game and can’t properly assess it.

I played the Rainbow Six Siege (buy Rainbow Six Siege on Amazon) beta. It was fun. Especially the Terrorist Hunt Mode. That said, I don’t think I’ll personally pre-order it and will likely wait for a good sale on it before jumping aboard… If it wasn’t for Terrorist Hunt Mode I don’t know if I’d do it even then… That mode is insanely fun.

Sword Coast Legends… if you enjoy D&D you MUST buy this game. The DM tools alone in the better packages is worth the price. Pre-order the Digital Deluxe Version now. If you don’t like D&D then there probably isn’t much here over other RPG games like Divinity Original Sin, but certainly worth keeping an eye on. I’m nearly sure many Twitch streamers who do D&D groups will probably switch from Roll 20 to this because the tools allow a much better narrative in many ways… others less so, but those issues are being resolved.

Rocket League… not going to even link it. Buy it. Play it. Love it.

I still need to finish both Dragon Age: Inquisition and Witcher 3…

There’s lots of others I’m sure I’m missing, but those are the highlights of the last couple weeks anyhow. What are your really big games that you are playing right now?
