Locked Down on a GPS Choice
Jun 2nd, 2008 by Brian A. Thomas
I have decided on which GPSr to get.
This costs $234.09. (Not sure why they don’t show the price on the front, perhaps it is too cheap to advertise on the picture since everyone local sells it for $299.99… so see, were getting a deal here.) I am also willing to toss in some on my own cash to help, though I would rather use my money to get some of the accessories, such as the street maps….or getting the 60CSx below which sounds like it would be better for turn by turn directions.
A few notes. Notice the HCx added to the name, this is an important feature over the regular Vista… Also notice is a Vista not a Legend.
Father’s Day is coming up, and I’ll remind people that I spent over $80 on Mother’s Day. ![]()
Perhaps people can team up together to get it. Mother… father… Sara… Perhaps some still owe something for my Birthday (LOL).
Of course we need a few accessories to go with that:
For car navigation:
($86.70, down from it’s normal $99.99 price). I am not sure if you get a free upgrade to the newest version of that after you buy the base version or not… I am 99.999% sure that any maps included on the unit itself get a free upgrade as soon as you register it. If I did need to upgrade, then I would at a later date, I am sure the street maps included are good enough for what we would use it for for now.
A power cable for in car use
That is $29.74. Probably need just one since we could easily move it from car to car.
Also needed is some form of dashboard mount. Most likely 2.
EDIT: I have read it is best to avoid the window mounted ones (illegal in some states anyhow) since it draws attention to the fact that you have a GPS, even if it isn’t in the mount at the time, they may break in to look for it since GPS theft is high (higher than radio theft). Best bet for a mount is a friction mount that you can hide easily as well as the unit (if you aren’t taking out with you).
Okay I found the dash mount for the unit.
For portable use:
A good case like
and holster for it
Topo maps would probably help for our geocaching, hiking uses.
Most of those things are optional though, what is really needed right now is the unit itself.
Of course if somebody wanted to get me the Colorado 300
or 400t
Both cases also need the street maps, but hey…More power to you. ![]()
EDIT: Strike the Colorado 300 or 400t. Seems they still have firmware issues… then again Garmin is pretty good at the firmware fixes, unlike some of the other GPSr manufacturers. Anyhow, in the place of a Colorado I would suggest for $398.83
Of course, seems lots of the forums still suggest the Vista over the 60CSx for geocaching use.
