More Troops?!
Jan 16th, 2007 by Brian A. Thomas
I decided to say something about Bush’s plan to send 20,000 more soldiers to Iraq.
First off, I supported us going to war. I think it was needed. Saddam had been threated every year by the UN with military action, sometimes several times a year, ever since Desert Storm. They were a toothless threat. We finally took the action they were too afraid to. Saddam needed removed. I never thought it was about the war on terror, and to call it as such was very bad policy, but simply the need to do something about a guy who was killing and torturing tons of his own people, and was refusing to comply with UN rules to which he agreed to at the end of Desert Storm. If you threaten a child with a spanking but never follow through, they will quickly learn you don’t mean it. The same thing happened with the UN and Saddam. They threatened military action, but never did anything and he thought nobody ever would.
However, we achieved our main goal of freeing the people from their menace of Saddam. We opened them to a democracy and started them on their way to reestablishing their own military and police forces again. It is clear we can not stay until things are fully stable, as it is also clear there is a bit of a civil war brewing, and that is something we don’t need to be directly involved in. It is time to start making an exit from Iraq, not sending more troops in.
